Rembrandt van Rijn was not only a master painter, but is also regarded as one of the most innovative and influential etchers in art history
He produced around 290 etchings during his lifetime
Rembrandt scratched a wax-coated copper plate with a needle. The plate was then placed in a bath of etching acid, causing the lines to be etched into the metal.
Just as in his paintings, he managed to create a dramatic interplay of light and shadow in his etchings
2 etchings are signed and dated on the plate
The patinated gilded frame with multiple tiers, along with the passe-partout and fillet around the edge of the etchings, draw your attention to the small work of art in the centre
