Oil on canvas ” Our Lady of the Sea” by Georges Frederick
At the heart we see a Madonna and Child. This dark-skinned representation of the Virgin Mary is depicted in a traditional, icon-like pose. Both figures wear ornate golden crowns, and Mary holds a star-tipped scepter in her right hand, signaling her role as a queenly and celestial protectress.
The composition is highly symmetrical. On either side of the base, two white ceramic vases hold bouquets of stiff, golden metallic flowers, further emphasizing the painting’s nature as an an offering of gratitude for safety at sea.
A large, detailed model sailing ship rests at the base of the Madonna, while the Child Jesus holds a smaller golden boat in His hands.
Behind the central figures is a vast, vibrant blue sea or harbor. It is filled with a dense, shimmering forest of golden sailing masts and ships, rendered in a style that resembles gold leaf. This creates a “golden harbor” that represents the maritime communities under her protection.
Georges Frédéric (1900 -1981) was a notable Belgian painter known for his lyrical interpretations of coastal life and maritime scenes. This 1975 piece is a classic example of his style, blending religious iconography with his frequent harbor and ship motifs
