This axe is also known as a kilonda, it is not an everyday tool but a potent symbol of power and prestige
The axes served as royal scepters or insignia of high office for chiefs and titled members of the king’s court. They symbolized the owner’s authority and control over significant aspects of society, such as ironworking, a craft rich in both practical and supernatural significance in the region.
This axe was made by the Nsapo subgroup of the Songye people who were particularly known as skilled blacksmiths who produced these elaborate ceremonial weapons.
