Mixed media painting depicting a group of figures engaged in a lively dance with figurative silhouettes that capture movement
This large-scale work utilises vibrant, contrasting colours with central characters in vivid green and blue dresses.
The artist uses colour cleverly to capture the energy and rhythm of a dance floor. By placing the bright green and blue figures directly against the deep magenta background, a visual ‘vibration’ is created. Because these colours are opposite each other on the colour spectrum, they almost seem to leap off the canvas. This enhances the dynamic feel of the dancers
The figures on the left are rendered in softer shades of orange and yellow. This creates an effect known in photography as ‘motion blur’. The sharper, brighter colours in the centre draw the eye, whilst the softer silhouettes around them seem to move like a haze of bodies in a crowded space.
The yellow background acts as a kind of artificial light. The dancers’ shadows are dark red and stretch across the floor, giving the movement a strong sense of depth and direction.
